Diabetes Stage 1

Stage 1 for type 1 diabetes is when this disease begins in the body. This occurs before you typically notice any symptoms or are aware of any changes in the body.

Autoantibodies are proteins produced by immune cells when the immune system starts to attack its own cells. In the case of type 1 diabetes, this attack is on the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas.

Having the presence of autoantibodies in your blood is an early sign you may have an autoimmune disease like type 1 diabetes. During stage 1, you typically have two or more autoantibodies in the blood.
